Pondering on how ridiculous this behaviour is got me to thinking about whether any other industry would be allowed to behave like this.
Imagine us writers taking a similar approach to boost sales. I think it's a great idea! Let's round up some hacks and go stand outside a local mall armed with sjamboks. Every time we see a customer coming out of the shops with a CD, DVD or computer game we will intimidate them and insist they return it and buy a book instead. If they resist we will administer a beating in the interest of increased literacy.
Come on guys. Is this free enterprise? Is this the democracy that was so hard-fought in our amazing country?
Surely democratic rights include the right to chose your preferred mode of transport without fear of harassment.
Is the taxi business an industry or a thinly disguised mafia on wheels? It's time the relevant authorities enforced the rule of law and made this industry act like a normal commercial enterprise competing against other modes of transport on the basis of price and service. Thuggery is not an acceptable marketing strategy.
We have a great country and it is sad so see freedom of choice trampled on by a few unruly elements.
