In the news today; Shortly after the release of the song Chicken to Change (with its very funny tongue-in-cheek music video), Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has slapped a ban on the artists, South African based band Freshlyground. Their imminent visit to Zimbabwe has now been called off.
Fonkong News took to the streets to seek public opinion. Speaking on condition on anonymity Mr Jonas Makwerekere, a freelance gardener from Zimbabwe who now plies his trade in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, had this to say,
“Eee...that's too terrible, freshly ground has been banned. What does President Mugabe have against decent coffee, now what will the touristi drink. Maybe the rumours about Mrs Mugabe owning an instant coffee factory are true.
When Fonkong News pointed out that the banning has nothing to do with coffee, but relates to the song Chicken for Change Mr Makwerekwere was still confused,
“I've heard of this chicken for change thing, where some Zimbabwean traders give change in fowls rather than money because the money is worth so little, but I never knew someone made a song about it.”
Another aspiring Zimbabwean gardener, who was standing nearby and overheard Mr Makwerekwere's comments, did not have an opinion on the banning but did ask what this thing tourist is. Makwerekwere explained that his colleague was still young and would not remember the days when the tourist was a common and widespread species in Zimbabwe, but sadly was now on the endangered list and seemed to be heading for extinction in that country.
